Llantrisant Health Park is a new major regional healthcare development that will improve access to diagnostic tests and planned care for people across south-east Wales. Led by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in partnership with Cardiff and Vale and Aneurin Bevan health boards, the scheme aims to build regional resilience by sharing diagnostic capacity, specialists, and investment in modern facilities, removing short-term patient visits from hospital sites The chosen site, a former British Airways avionics engineering campus, offers close proximity to acute services and established infrastructure at Royal Glamorgan Hospital, enabling it to operate as an off‑site hub while remaining minutes from the hospital.
After testing found the existing buildings could not be repurposed for healthcare use, the Health Board appointed our team alongside Stride Treglown’s architects to develop new‑build proposals spanning mechanical, electrical, public health, civil, structural, acoustics, fire, transport, and geotechnical engineering. As procurement evolved towards a modular delivery route, our role shifted to design and technical assurance, including review of mechanical and electrical designs and support with approvals as the scheme was adapted to modular constraints and module sizes.
Phase one focuses on a three‑storey Community Diagnostic Hub of around 7,500 square metres, expanding access to MRI, CT, ultrasound, X‑ray, and endoscopy services, along with a dedicated endoscopy academy to support workforce development and regional training capacity. The delivery strategy uses modern methods of construction (MMC) and off‑site manufacture to reduce program time, improve quality, and reduce disruption.
Even before the permanent hub becomes operational, the site has already provided additional scanning capability through a temporary mobile MRI unit, enabled by reusing existing on‑site infrastructure for power and services. Llantrisant Health Park reflects a hospital to community shift, bringing diagnostics closer to people and easing pressure on acute hospital estates through pragmatic, safety‑first solutions.
