Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust began a significant programme of capital improvements at its City Road site in London. Partnering with ADP Architecture, our team designed building services for a new research centre at the world-renowned hospital. Located on the second floor of the main hospital building, the project included installing a Faraday Cage—an enclosure that blocks electromagnetic interference and protects advanced research.
After securing funding for new research equipment, the Trust selected two rooms for conversion to support critical ophthalmic studies. These spaces required blackout conditions for research and needed to serve as staff offices. The rooms previously suffered from poor ventilation and overheating, which affected both comfort and research quality.
We advanced the project to Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stage 4, designing modern systems for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as updated electrical services, including emergency lighting and fire alarms. The mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) team worked closely with ADP to make sure the Faraday Cage was properly integrated, maintaining its effectiveness and supporting a high-quality research environment. The team planned the work in phases to minimise disruption and allow offices to remain open.
Our team also supported the Trust by providing specialist design for a laser eye surgery suite for private patients. Located on the fourth floor of a newer extension, the suite had inadequate ventilation. We developed an improved solution, working with equipment manufacturers from the early design stages to meet strict room requirements. The design reached RIBA Stage 4, and we assisted in preparing tender documents for contractor selection.
Through careful planning, technical expertise, and minimal disruption, Moorfields Eye Hospital now offers a modern and highly specialised environments for research and clinical care. This supports the Trust’s mission to remain at the forefront of innovation.
