VINCI St. Modwen, in partnership with the Covent Garden Market Authority, set out to deliver a landmark multiphased project to redevelop New Convent Garden Market. VINCI Construction UK appointed our team to provide structural design services for the construction of three distribution superstructures.
We established a smooth and efficient co-ordination process with all members of the design team, adopting an open and honest approach to developing design solutions while maintaining a firm approach to structural integrity. However, we also adopted a non-traditional approach to progressing the design with weekly Skype meetings, allowing 3D co-ordination to take place between engineers and architects. This supported interactive resolution to issues between models and also opened up design discussions regarding specific areas of the building that may not have been addressed until much later. This approach eliminated the need for the initial rounds of mark-ups, meaning our models were much tighter when drawings were reviewed before final issue.
Previously operating on three sites totalling 57 acres (23 hectares), the market now occupies three new buildings on a single 37-acre (15-hectare) site. Construction was phased over six years and delivered market facilities for over 200 market businesses.
