The new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC) is one of the biggest projects Wales has seen in decades. Velindre University NHS Trust intends this facility to deliver better outcomes through cancer treatment, enhanced diagnostic capability, and greater access to innovation, training and research.
SACYR, the project’s design and construction partner, engaged our team to deliver electrical engineering, civil engineering, fire engineering, and acoustics services from early design stages through to delivery. We worked closely with the Trust and the wider design team, including architect White Arkitekter, to help shape a resilient, highly serviced all‑electric hospital designed for long‑term operational flexibility.
Every aspect of the nVCC focuses around the needs of patients, employees, families, and carers. From easier navigation and better parking to therapeutic spaces and dedicated family areas, the new building will enhance comfort, dignity and the overall experience of care.
The project presented significant technical complexity. Extensive imaging facilities, such as MRI and CT suites, needed ultra‑low vibration environments and careful coordination with building structure and circulation routes. Our acoustics specialists collaborated with the structural and architectural teams to mitigate vibration and noise transfer, protecting clinical performance and patient comfort. The use of innovative low‑carbon materials, including cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements and hemp‑based façade systems, required additional analysis and engineering judgement to balance sustainability objectives with healthcare performance standards.
The nVCC will be the first all-electric hospital in the UK, supported by heat pump technology and on‑site renewables, removing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing long‑term resilience. We helped redefine electrical infrastructure layouts to overcome serviceability constraints, routing extensive distribution through basements to preserve key architectural spaces and deliver a robust, maintainable solution.
Due for completion in the spring of 2027, the nVCC will provide a future‑ready healthcare landmark for Wales, supporting high‑quality patient care through careful integration of engineering expertise, sustainability, and human‑centred design.
