City center living that looks forward to a sustainable future

The transformation of Birmingham continues. We provided transport planning and highway design advice to support the planning application for Smallbrook Queensway. Regenerating the site will deliver three new residential apartment towers ranging from 44 to 56 storeys with ground floor commercial use replacing the existing office buildings. The redevelopment will also incorporate new public stairways that address the large level difference across the development and open up the Southside and Chinatown area to the rest of the city center.

Providing transport advice that reflects Birmingham City Council’s policy and vision for a sustainable city, we worked closely with the Council throughout the pre-application process. While balancing requirements of the client and the City, we advised on a strategy that provides access and parking for deliveries and a large cycle storage facility for residents—with provision for different vehicle types such as electric bike charging. We also designed a solution for refuse collection access that works with wind-mitigation landscaping and, supporting the noise assessment team, we provided transport inputs into the environmental impact assessment process.

Planning permission was granted by Birmingham City Council in September 2023.
