Switching from a roundabout to a traffic light-controlled junction

Creating a sustainable movement corridor

The University of Surrey’s Research Park sits in a high traffic area of Guildford, Surrey. When the Highways Authority raised concerns that the nearby roundabout was contributing to A3 corridor congestion, the University contracted our team to conduct a modelling review for a proposed scheme to signalise the roundabout.

After conducting the modelling review and engaging in consultation with key stakeholders, we identified that a more effective approach would be to entirely replace the roundabout with a signalised crossroad junction that operated under microprocessor optimised vehicle actuation (MOVA) traffic responsive control. Our team oversaw the work to completion, including the engineering and traffic signal designs and specifications. A key aspect of this is the queue detection on the approach to the A3 which triggers special signal timings when there is a risk of blocking back.

The plan, part of what the Guildford Borough Council (GBC) called the “sustainable movement corridor,” now provides easier and more accessible routes for public transport, cyclists, and pedestrians around a busy area in Guildford.
