UKWIR Integrating and Producing Hydrogen
The UK Hydrogen Strategy outlines the journey towards a low-carbon hydrogen sector in the UK—delivering an ambitious 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030, supporting net zero emissions by 2050. UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) set up its Integrating and Producing Hydrogen project to explore the potential impacts on the water sector of trying to reach those goals, commissioning us as the project team lead.
We investigated the relationship between hydrogen production, water availability, emerging technologies, and the role water utilities can play in the hydrogen value chain. As the research contractor, we worked with UKWIR, Ikigai, and Heriot-Watt University to make the most of our combined industry experience and academic knowledge.
Now completed, the project provides an industry-level understanding of how water utilities can contribute within the hydrogen value chain and demonstrates sector ambition in relation to the UK Hydrogen Strategy. This insight offers analysis of the various technology options available and how these can be most beneficially leveraged by water companies. In addition, it helps clarify what's possible with respect to water resource availability and core water utility services.
