Vyrnwy Frankton Grid Connection

Legally binding targets to switch to clean energy sources and the scattered locations of many renewable generation sites mean the UK needs extensive new and upgraded electricity infrastructure. To help address these challenges and local infrastructure that’s at capacity, Green GEN Cymru is exploring options to connect a series of new wind farm energy parks in Mid-Wales to the existing 400 kilovolt UK transmission network. They engaged our team to provide geoenvironmental support and 4.2 Stage front-end engineering design (FEED), spanning overhead line, substation, and underground cable.

The proposed Grug y Mynydd Collector substation would be located near a new wind farm, with the ability to accommodate power from other wind farms and grid connections proposed in the area. A 132-kilovolt connection would run approximately 50 kilometres (31 miles) to Shropshire, where it would connect to the existing transmission network.

Our designs informed the virtual fly throughs used in consultation events, helping community members visualise and respond to possible options for the infrastructure. By attending the consultations, our team could also offer explanations and additional technical information on the aims and constraints of the connection route, working in partnership with environmental, land management, and consenting specialists to address the wide range of public feedback. Following early consultation stages, Green GEN Cymru has been able to make sensitive adjustments, including a diversion away from a picturesque local church and identifying a smaller area for the collector substation, which is potentially more accessible and provides opportunities for landscape and biodiversity mitigation.

With maturing iterations of the design, Green GEN Cymru can continue to engage with communities surrounding the proposed infrastructure and work towards meeting national requirements, resulting in a stronger, more resilient renewable electricity network.
