Envisioning a town centre less reliant on motor vehicles

Croydon Council set up an international design competition that appointed Stantec and Dutch Landscape Architects OKRA in 2009. The aim was to develop a phased and realistic approach to the dismantling of the 1960’s highway structures and the barriers they create to transform the road into a city street.

The master planning vision proposed a dedicated public transport corridor to prioritise bus and tram movements along the corridor with an adjacent single carriageway for general traffic that provided access to car parks. These two transport corridors were separated by a wide central reservation, providing space for walking and cycling routes and creating an opportunity to plant trees and areas of low-level soft landscaping to green the corridor. Our scope of work included master planning, highway design (concept, feasibility, detailed), traffic modelling, road safety audits, tender documents and contractor (KEIR) site support.

The master plan successfully integrated the five city centre masterplans (West Croydon, East Croydon, Mid Croydon, Old Town and College Green). Together, they create a town centre that encourages walking and cycling by developing safe and attractive routes. They provide a catalyst for new development and funding, realizing a future town centre less dominated by and reliant on cars.
