Via m2, a joint venture with Mott MacDonald, we are supporting Scottish Water in designing one of the UK’s largest bioresources investments. The Daldowie Bioresource Treatment Centre near Glasgow will process around 65 percent of the country’s sewage sludge while creating renewable energy and valuable agricultural products.
We have a long‑standing relationship with Scottish Water through m2. This included development of their Biosolids Strategy, which identified advanced anaerobic digestion as the preferred solution for Daldowie. We have also supported Scottish Water with key decisions on plant, throughput and location, providing comprehensive sludge treatment expertise, carbon assessment, environmental screening, and financial analysis to enable evidence‑based investment decisions.
The centre will use thermal hydrolysis as pretreatment to anaerobic digestion, a process that breaks down the sludge to produce biogas. This will then be used to produce heat and electricity for the treatment process, with surplus biogas converted to biomethane for export to the national gas grid.
Construction is due to start in 2027. Once operational, the centre will treat around 85,000 tonnes of sewage sludge each year, generating 58.6 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity to power the site and 8.3 million cubic metres (294 million cubic feet) of biomethane annually. This is enough biomethane to supply more than 8,000 homes while producing a high‑quality Class A bioresource to be used as agricultural fertiliser.
