A sustainable mixed-use residential and commercial development becoming known locally as Swindon’s ‘front garden’
Wichelstowe is 300 hectares of agricultural land designated for sustainable mixed-use residential and commercial development. The mixed urban extension to the south west of the town includes 4,300 dwellings, 100,000 square metres of commercial development, four schools, a 1,000-space park-and-ride site, a new superstore and district centre, and a major package of infrastructure works.
At the start of this development, we carried out earthworks studies for Swindon Borough Council to establish existing ground conditions and identify risk of contamination from previous site use. This data informed the reuse of materials and a canal investigation to establish the water retention capacity of existing soils used in canal restoration. A phased approach to development allowed construction to take place on engineered platforms as others were being completed.
After that, Swindon Borough Council appointed us to consult on transport, highways, and engineering design for the development. In 2016, we worked on the district centre design code. This advanced core community facilities including supporting more residential opportunities by 2018.
