Established in 1886 to protect settlers to southwestern New Mexico, Fort Bayard has a rich cultural and architectural legacy. Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2004, the fort was mainly run by African American Buffalo Soldiers, then became the U.S. Army’s first tuberculosis sanitarium and later a Veteran’s Affairs Hospital.
The Village of Santa Clara partnered with our team to help revitalize the Fort Bayard site and preserve its unique heritage for future generations. Collaborating closely with the State of New Mexico, we are developing a comprehensive revitalization plan by evaluating the condition of existing facilities and infrastructure, analyzing economic impacts and opportunities, and calculating renovation costs. We are also providing surveying, utility, paving, and grading design for new parking lots, sidewalks, accessible facilities, and drainage. Additionally, our architects are rehabilitating five existing buildings for use by the Forest Service.
