Integrated digital approach to managing geohazard risk

June 21, 2023

How do we keep pipelines safe from geohazards? Stantec’s Nigel Denby spoke to Engineering News-Record about new technologies to mitigate risks

Every day, pipelines are transporting raw materials and fuel across North America — with about 840,000 kilometres of pipelines in Canada and 2.6 million miles in the United States.  One of the challenges facing oil and gas companies is that pipelines cross vast landscapes that experience erosion, seismic activity, changes in permafrost conditions, and landslides. While there are strategies for reenforcing and rerouting pipelines that run a higher risk of geohazard damage, the industry is proactively developing tools to identify pipelines that are at risk and the risks that are present.

In this Engineering News-Record article, Stantec’s geotechnical leader Nigel Denby talks about innovative tools that the company has developed to protect North America’s pipelines.
