Stantec’s Lance Menzies spoke with Western Mariner Magazine about delivering large vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy

As ships become increasingly complex, dedicated outfitting facilities are critical to keep vessel construction moving efficiently, safely, and on schedule. At Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards, the new modern outfitting pier is transforming how we build and deliver large vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy.

The Stantec-designed project creates a dedicated workspace where vessels can be brought alongside to complete mechanical, electrical, and systems installation, followed by testing and commissioning. Built to withstand seismic activity, sea level rise, and storm surges, the pier also integrates advanced utility systems, crane infrastructure, and environmental controls to support modern shipbuilding operations.

In Western Mariner Magazine, Lance Menzies, project manager and lead marine structural engineer at Stantec, discusses the engineering, operational, and environmental innovations behind Seaspan’s new outfitting pier and its role in supporting Canada’s shipbuilding future.
