The International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) recently released a global assessment examining the current state and outlook of direct potable reuse (DPR), highlighting its growing role in long‑term water security strategies worldwide.
Developed in collaboration with Stantec, the report—A Pathway to Potable Reuse: A Global Status Update and Strategic Outlook—gives a region‑by‑region snapshot of DPR progress across more than 30 countries.
John Hanula, senior vice president of Growth and Innovation at Stantec and an IDRA board officer, contributed to the report, which highlights DPR as a proven, scalable solution for communities facing climate pressure, population growth, and long‑term water stress. For example, when supported by strong public health protections and transparent community engagement, operational systems in places like Namibia and several US cities show that DPR can safely add advanced treated water to drinking water supplies.
The report examines what’s driving adoption of DPR and reinforces its role in advancing circular water systems and building resilient, sustainable water supplies for the future.
