Stantec designs Drummondville’s new ultramodern water treatment plant

Design firm takes part in the Quebec municipality’s largest infrastructure project ever

Leading global design firm Stantec has completed the engineering of the City of Drummondville’s new ultramodern water treatment plant, the biggest infrastructure project in the Quebec municipality’s history. Stantec will also supervise construction, which will begin in late summer 2021. The project met a major milestone on July 12, when the Canadian and Quebec governments announced over $32.2 million in financial assistance.

“The new facility will deliver more a homogeneous, automated and efficient production for a safe, high-quality drinking water supply,” said Alain Carrier, Drummondville’s mayor, at the official groundbreaking ceremony. “This is the biggest infrastructure project in the City of Drummondville’s history.”

The new infrastructure will be built on land adjacent to the current plant, which dates back to 1928 and had become obsolete. The choice location will make it possible to use the existing underground water storage reservoirs and maintain the current configuration of the drinking water distribution system. Using state-of-the-art technologies, including ozonation, biological filtration and UV disinfection, the new plant will provide a treatment capacity of 69,500 m³ of drinking water per day, a nearly 30% increase over the current facility. In addition to Drummondville, the plant will supply the municipalities of Saint-Majorique-de-Grantham, Saint-Germain-de-Grantham and Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover, for a total population of about 100,000 residents.

In association with TLA Architectes, Stantec produced the overall plant design, including the civil, structural, building mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as the new water treatment chain. The team also designed the drinking water distribution pipe layout from the existing plant to meet requirements for continued operation during the work and the transition to the new plant. Exterior design work is also planned in order to move a bike path and convert the remaining area into green space, thus ensuring the new facilities integrate seamlessly with the work zone. At an estimated cost of $80 million, the new plant is slated for commissioning in 2024.
