Stantec selects Dominic Kempson as leader for Nature-based Solutions practice

Environmental Services leader to focus on developing NbS global practice

Dominic Kempson has been promoted to lead Stantec’s Nature-based Solutions (NbS) practice in Environmental Services (ES), overseeing strategic direction, technical development, and global growth.

Kempson has more than 30 years of experience in environmental consulting, with an emphasis on ecosystem assessment, restoration, and watershed management. He is a Fellow of the Society of American Military Engineers. Kempson was most recently ES’s coastal and marine solutions lead. He has expertise in ecosystem recovery, flood risk management, urban and watershed scale development, climate adaptation, and support for water supply, treatment, and conveyance.

“Dom’s passion for and belief in the global importance of Nature-based Solutions is one of his greatest strengths and assets to Environmental Services,” said Susan Reisbord, ES executive vice president. “Dom has worked in many sectors and with diverse clients, and he brings that strong network to advancing Stantec’s NbS efforts.”

NbS uses the positive benefits of natural systems in conjunction with traditional engineering methods. NbS adds ecological resilience to infrastructure and generates multiple layers of environmental, social, climatic, and economic benefits.

“This is an exciting time for NbS as more clients, government agencies, and organizations worldwide recognize the value of nature in their projects,” Kempson said. “Stantec’s deep bench of engineers, planners, and scientists are uniquely qualified to help our clients leverage the power of natural systems to develop innovative, climate-ready Nature-based Solutions to address their challenges. We have been using these techniques for more than 30 years.”

More about Nature-based Solutions
Leveraging natural systems to develop Nature-based Solutions play a vital role in improving water quality, reducing flood risk, improving and sustaining biodiversity, storing carbon, mitigating climate impacts, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Stantec’s global portfolio of NbS projects include the Green Park Biodiversity in Reading, United Kingdom; Blue and Green Corridors in New Orleans, Louisiana; and the Cowichan Lake Weir Rise project in British Columbia. Stantec has partnered with the Network for Engineering with Nature to expand the understanding and reach of NbS in the US.
