A landmark headquarters for the RCMP in Iqaluit
Stantec, in association with IBI Group’s Edmonton office, was commissioned to provide a landmark headquarters for the RCMP’s ‘V’ Division as well as the Iqaluit Detachment. Borrowing its aesthetic from the arctic landscape in which it sits, the building is formally arranged around protruding glass wedges that house public spaces and grounded linear two story quadrants containing secure areas. The design strives to welcome the public and present a sense of openness while accommodating the physical needs of confidentiality, security and respect.
The building will house three facilities under one roof: 1) ‘V’ Division Headquarters, including a combined mess, various crime and enforcement units, OCC, informatics, and forensics including a vehicle exam bay, 2) Amalgamated Detachment areas as well as locker and exercise facilities, detention cell block; secure and Detachment garage Bays, and 3) a Regional Training Centre including a firing range, dormitories, classrooms and simulator facilities.
This building will be a leader in Nunavut not only for its scope and use of building technology but in its overall design. To this end the project team will design toward a sustainable building meeting RCMP policies and LEED™ Silver accreditation. Energy and water conservation, mixed mode ventilation, day lighting and use of natural and reclaimed/recycled materials are typical attributes of Stantec's design approach for northern buildings.
