A new facility for Mark Twain Elementary School that supports a surging student population

Over 47 years ago, Mark Twain Elementary School was the first of its kind built in the Alvin Independent School District (ISD). But these days, a capacity of 600 couldn’t keep up with the steadily increasing student population. Alvin ISD needed to find space for another 200 students, but Mark Twain Elementary School, as it stood, wasn’t the answer.

A new facility needed to be built, and nearly 50 years later, the second Mark Twain Elementary School is making more firsts. This time it’ll be Alvin ISD’s first two-story elementary school. Why two stories? A smaller footprint, lower roof expenditures, and more exterior windows.

In this design, the new library is centrally located and spans the full height of the building. Clerestory windows (high windows above eye level) provide even more natural light, and subtle touches in ceiling height and material changes emphasize the relationship between the library and the school.

With more space and more students, Mark Twain Elementary School is lighting up Alvin ISD with learning.
