A community-driven effort to protect San Antonio's sacred ecosystem and cultural heritage

Spirit Reach Contemplative Pathway

The Blue Hole (known as the “Yanaguana", meaning "spirit waters") and Headwaters of the San Antonio River hold deep historical, cultural, and religious significance within the San Antonio community. In response to growing environmental threats to this sacred space, the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) has partnered with Bexar County through the Bexar County Creeks and Trail Program to prevent irreversible damage to the only nature sanctuary in San Antonio.

The area faces pressures from expanding urban development, which has led to a decline in native flora and fauna, reduced rainwater filtration, and increased stormwater runoff. Our team was brought in to provide stream restoration, economic resilience, and design services for the Spirit Reach Contemplative Path. This pathway will connect Brackenridge Park to the Blue Hole and Headwaters of the San Antonio River, featuring a safe passage under Hildebrand Avenue. We’re also supporting the project with a feasibility study, engineering design, permitting assistance, and services throughout the bidding and construction phases.

The Blue Hole spring is not only a vital ecological landmark known for its bird habitat and native wildflowers, but it also holds immense cultural value, having been a place of healing for indigenous communities for thousands of years. One of the main challenges is minimizing potential harm to the sensitive ecosystem during construction while addressing flood risks through trail enhancements. We tackled this through eco-friendly design practices, including elevated pathways, buffer zones, native plant restoration, and construction methods that minimize land disturbance.

Engagement with the community and invested parties is vital to the success of this project. A design that honors the area’s sacredness is paramount, which is why the project team is engaging with SARA, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, University of the Incarnate Word students, indigenous groups, residents, businesses, and property owners. Although uniting diverse community voices presents challenges, a clear plan developed through consensus will result in the successful, respectful restoration of this cherished site.

Upon completion, the Spirit Reach Contemplative Pathway will enhance connectivity, protect ecosystems, celebrate cultural heritage, improve accessibility, and engage the community.
