Extensive renovations to grow on-campus housing and extend the life of the heritage buildings at UC Santa Cruz

One of the most beautiful campuses in the UC system, University of California, Santa Cruz was looking to improve from the inside out. Their need for extensive renovations would grow on-campus housing and extend the life of their heritage buildings, increasing student safety and convenience as a result.

Stantec was called upon to renovate and seismically strengthen the Porter College Residence Halls, including Hall A, which stood five stories and housed 232 students. Our modernization added two new floors of accommodation and increased student occupancy to 409 beds – a 76% increase. The project also involved a full replacement of the exterior envelope and glazing systems, replacement of building mechanical systems, new energy-efficient lighting and water-saving plumbing fixtures, and sustainable building materials and finishes. Our design extended the useful life of the building beyond 100 years.

Putting student accessibility at the forefront of our strategy increased on-campus occupancy while reducing transportation impact, costs and overall energy and water use. These results led to a 10-year program to perform repair and major maintenance of the campus’ ten residential colleges.
