As Practice Leader, Martin provides technical leadership and peer review for our pavement investigations and designs in New Zealand and Australia, and guidance for the region’s pavement engineers. In quality management, he works with the leadership team to champion our quality systems, driving excellent project outcomes across our Transport business.
Having researched and been the primary author for the New Zealand Guide to Pavement Evaluation and Treatment Design, Martin has a detailed knowledge of the theories of pavement design. He’s also a practical engineer able to balance technical solutions with construction and budgetary constraints.
Martin enjoys pavement design which optimises the materials and quantities used instead of ‘over-designing’ to minimise risks. Optimising comes at significantly reduced environmental and financial costs.
Job highlight? After the Kaikōura earthquake, State Highway 1 traffic was rerouted inland over a significantly weaker road, resulting in an almost real-time pavement experiment as the road quickly fell apart. Martin’s job was to help assess the road’s condition, determine strengthening needs, and review pavement designs.
Outside of work Martin loves building and maintaining mountain bike tracks—and riding them.
