Stantec has been shortlisted in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards 2020, a prestigious UK awards programme that showcases the best civil engineering work in the South West.
Stantec’s Wichelstowe Canalside Infrastructure scheme has been recognised as one of the civil engineering projects making a significant contribution to the region’s society, economy or local communities. The project impressed a judging panel of the South West’s senior engineers and was selected from a highly competitive field to be one of 12 finalists this year.
Dan Hayes, Director Civil Engineering South, said, “Communities are at the heart of everything we do and we worked alongside Swindon Borough Council to deliver more than just houses, our focus was on delivering real social value for the emerging community and the local area. By building roads, bridges and public spaces, Stantec provided a platform for the community to grow and develop. Restoring the existing canal, as part of these works, was a vital link in allowing houses and community facilities to be established. As well as maintaining and enhancing existing wildlife corridors and biodiversity. We’re very proud of the contribution we’ve made to this community and we’re thrilled that it’s been recognised by the ICE.”
Miranda Housden, ICE South West regional director, said, “It’s a huge achievement to reach the final of the awards due to the high volume and standard of entries. Our awards showcase the innovation and creativity of civil engineers in the region, showing how the industry is working to address the region’s key infrastructure challenges and enhance the lives of local people. I congratulate all our finalists for 2020 and encourage them to rally support for their project through the People’s Choice vote.”
Wichelstowe Canalside Infrastructure Works is an £8.5m project that has created a framework for the development of essential facilities to enable the new community at Wichelstowe to flourish. The infrastructure elements were designed to form the local District Centre, and include a new feature footbridge created in collaboration with a local artist, a public square, community street and restored canal.
Following a second round of judging, the winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in Bristol later in the year. The public can also choose their favourite project from the shortlist. The People’s Choice Award is a free online vote on the ICE South West website, where people are encouraged pick the scheme they think has made the biggest difference to their local community.
The closing date for voting in the People’s Choice Award is Sunday 14 June 2020. The regional winner will represent the South West in an international vote, run by ICE later in the year.
