The HS2 Impact Assessment, delivered by Stantec on behalf of Yorkshire Water, has taken home the Sir John Fowler Award for research projects and feasibility studies, at the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2020.
High Speed 2 will be the UK’s new £56 billion high speed railway. On its route from London to Leeds, it will cross 100kms of Yorkshire Water’s operational area, putting approximately 400 (190kms) of assets and a number of strategic sites at risk of impact. As Yorkshire Water’s Strategic Planning Partner, Stantec were asked to assess, analyse, and develop mitigation solutions to all 400 impacts for inclusion into HS2’s Hybrid Bill submission to Parliament. The output of this Impact Assessment was an outline mitigation solution, a working area plot and a budget estimate for each asset.
This vital and extensive task, which was delivered on time and budget, has safeguarded our client’s infrastructure, whilst ensuring future resilience and minimising potential impact on their asset base. The Stantec team demonstrated excellence in delivery and continue to support our client, Yorkshire Water, as this major infrastructure project moves into its next delivery stage.
With future high-speed rail and other major infrastructure projects on the horizon in the North of England and further afield, this approach could be replicated/modified for other clients to safeguard large portfolios of impacted assets. It can also be used to fully quantify their risk exposure and ensure future resilience.
Comments from the judging panel included:
“When you hear that HS2 proposals will impact on 400 Yorkshire Water assets, from small supply pipes to a massive Victorian sewer under the proposed Leeds Station, you start to appreciate the immensity of coordinating a project of such magnitude.
This thorough study, completed under tight time constraints, combined multiple data sets to evaluate and mitigate the risk to our county's water assets.”
Ben Clarke, Client Service Manager, Stantec said; “We are absolutely thrilled the HS2 Impact Assessment team has achieved this recognition from the ICE, by way of receiving the prestigious Sir John Fowler Award. Through effective stakeholder collaboration this vital and extensive task, delivered on time and within budget, has safeguarded our client’s infrastructure, whilst ensuring future resilience and minimising potential impact on their asset base.”
