Stantec named as finalist in the celebrated Ground Engineering Awards

Stantec is proud to announce that it has been shortlisted in three categories at the 2021 Ground Engineering Awards.

Stantec is a finalist in the following categories:

• Award for Digital Innovation – DebrisFlow Predictor
• Award for Technical Excellence – DebrisFlow Predictor
• International Project of the Year - Cowichan Valley Regional District Hazard Assessment
  

DebrisFlow Predictor is Stantec’s new digital tool to help predict landslide runout and impacts. The software program, developed by our expert team at Stantec, not only reasonably predicts the path of the debris flow, but more importantly where it will go—identifying the potential impacts to people, the environment, and infrastructure.

Our team used the DebrisFlow Predictor to assess a vulnerable community on the steep North Shore of Cowichan Lake who were exposed to potential debris flow hazards from adjacent slopes. After modeling over 70,000 debris flows in the area of interest, our team was able to define a credible runout limit of debris flow hazards leading to the modification of zoning bylaws. The success of the work led to Stantec using DebrisFlow Predictor to predict hazards in the rest of the Regional District in 2021, modeling an additional 150,000 debris flows and helping create meaningful zoning data.

The Ground Engineering Awards bring the industry together to celebrate the achievements of projects, people and businesses across geotechnical engineering. Categories cover amazing projects, technical excellence, and forward-thinking geotechnical companies, that are assessed by an independent panel of judges.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony which will take place on the 23 November at The Brewery in central London.
