Stantec wins Protecting and Saving Lives category at the E&T Awards

Stantec is celebrating success at the E&T innovation awards, which recognise and celebrate the very best new innovations across science, engineering and technology. The Protecting and Saving Lives Award was given to Fire Flow, a digital tool developed by Stantec with Thames Water and the London Fire Brigade.  

Not knowing if there is sufficient capacity to meet building fire flow requirements poses a real health and safety risk, technical experts at Stantec advanced conventional approaches to firefighting by designing a solution that would provide this data, reducing risk and making a real impact to the health, safety and wellbeing of our emergency services teams. The tool creates a digital twin of every building in London, categorizing them based on fire flow requirements and local capacity. This provides fast, accurate data transfer between water suppliers and the fire service, ultimately helping emergency services teams make more informed, safer decisions.

The system predicts water flow capacity for firefighting and identifies where  mitigation measures may be required or where more hydrants need to be installed. Fire Flow has quantified likely fire flows at each hydrant, so that London Fire Brigade firefighters can understand the performance of the hydrant network across the city.  The tool was recognised by the award judges for enhancing operational capability, improving conditions for firefighters and increasing environmental sustainability.

As a firefighter, the more you know about an emergency situation, the safer you are. Now for the first time, London Fire Brigade know the flow and firefighting capacity of every hydrant in the city, allowing them to better tackle blazes thanks to more informed decision making about where to station appliances, which hydrants to use and the best routing for hoses.”
