Clifton’s Integrated Constructed Wetland nets a double at prestigious Water Industry Awards

Yorkshire Water’s Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works – Integrated Constructed Wetland project has been named the Wastewater Innovation Project of the Year and Natural Capital Initiative of the Year at this year’s Water Industry Awards.
Clifton integrated constructed wetland, designed by Stantec is a low energy, environmentally friendly method of wastewater treatment – the first in England to treat all flows and the first ever Biodiversity Net Gain positive treatment works.
Planted with over 24,000 wetland plants, the interconnected ponds stimulate wildlife diversity, achieving biodiversity net gain. This innovative solution has positively impacted the industry and attracted attention from various stakeholders across the industry.
Announcing the winner of the Natural Capital Initiative, the judges said, “This project was a clear winner, with an outstanding concept and implementation. Congratulations to Yorkshire Water, Stantec and Barhale Enpure JV for delivering a great example of how natural capital thinking can provide real benefits for customers and the environment.”
Commenting on the Wastewater Innovation category, they said, “The judges were unanimous in selecting this winner, which represents a step change both in its own right, and for the wider industry. The judges were particularly impressed with the learnings that can be taken forward from this project and applied elsewhere.”
The Environment Agency have supported the development of the project, working with Yorkshire Water, Stantec and delivery partner, Barhale Enpure JV. There is recognition across all parties on how important the success of this project is, influencing and driving real change in sustainable treatment solutions for the water industry.
Lewys Forsey, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “These awards are testament to the impact this project will have on the water industry as a whole. It would not have been possible without collaboration between each of the partners and the support of the Environment Agency.”
Rob McTaggart, Stantec’s technical director and project lead said: “The Clifton wetland project is a true example of how successful partnerships can bring innovation to the water industry and deliver natural capital which provides a flow of benefits to our people and their communities. Between us we achieved a “long shadow” which has influenced the industry.”
