Innovation shortlist for Yorkshire Water’s Clifton Integrated Constructed Wetland at CIRIA’s 2022 BIG Biodiversity Challenge Award

We are delighted that Yorkshire Water's Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) - Integrated Constructed Wetland has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Innovation Award at CIRIA’s 2022 BIG Biodiversity Challenge Awards.

Clifton WwTW offers a low energy, environmentally friendly method of wastewater treatment – the first in England – to treat all flows and the first ever Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) positive WwTW. The site has been shown to save an impressive operational carbon by 79% and embodied carbon by 50%, with over 24,000 plants being used to create an innovative, low carbon, nature-based solution.

Additionally, an ecological wilding area was created and planted out, adjacent to site using surplus waste materials, bringing opportunity to engage with local schools, providing educational visits, to study wildlife and plant bug houses.

The BIG Biodiversity Challenge to 'do one thing' invites the construction industry to add at least one new biodiversity enhancement to construction sites, developments or existing buildings. The Awards aim to raise greater awareness of the importance of biodiversity and to demonstrate how biodiversity enhancements can be incorporated at different scales and on different projects.

The Innovation category attracts a wide range of successful, innovative and unusual projects that show the application of bespoke products and interventions, data collection, collation and collaboration, while successfully demonstrating unusual and alternative approaches to the normal. The category specifically looks for projects that establish effective enhancement of biodiversity with a lasting legacy, that supports continual learning and improvement.

The winners will be announced that the Awards ceremony on 14 September at CIRIA, Griffin Court in London.
