Stantec is thrilled that its communication campaign, Inside SCOPE, was awarded ‘Highly Commended at the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) Awards 2022. Inside SCOPE received the commendation for the Action 2030 Award which seeks to recognise individuals or organisations who have had or are having the most impact in raising awareness, engaging others and/ or leading action in relation to the climate emergency and/or the biodiversity crisis.

Inside SCOPE was launched in November 2021 – an internal and external communications campaign – to present and share the discussions, pledges, commitments, and political speeches at COP26 in a simpler format. The campaign idea stemmed from the anticipation that the level of ‘noise’ during the two weeks of COP26 would be difficult to manage, breakdown, and understand when presented with so much information. Inside SCOPE was the approach to filter the essential information and act as a scientific knowledge transfer broker for clients.

The communications strategy included issuing across two Stantec websites, a social media programme, engaging with key account managers, global communications team, key clients, and business and trade networks. The campaign consisted of an (ongoing) The SCOPE podcast, two external online publications called Inside SCOPE [Issue 1 and Issue 2] and a two-week internal Climate Festival featuring panels, and speakers, hosted by our Developing Professionals Group (DPG) employee resource group.

Two Inside SCOPE publications featured commentary from nearly 50 Stantec specialists, representing every continent, and published each week on Stantec’s website, a UK regional networking website focusing on the built environment, a marketing newsletter, and social media. Inside SCOPE 1 was the most read piece of content in 2021, with over 800 views. Inside SCOPE 2 was fourth most popular in 2021, with over 400 views.

The internal DPG Climate Festival was hosted by two younger employees, featured two weeks’ of presentations and panels from 22 global specialists, and due to time zones, often recorded and hosted in the early hours of the morning. Almost 500 staff participated live with the events, and many more had access to recordings. The DPG is instrumental to developing younger employees during their careers at Stantec, including internal and external training, workshops and mentorship.

Stantec’s Climate Change team is currently planning activities and involvement for COP27, being held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt in November 2022.
