Yorkshire Water’s Clifton Integrated Constructed Wetland receives Net Zero Award

Yorkshire Water's Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works - Integrated Constructed Wetland has received the Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber (CEYH) Net Zero Award for its sustainable, low carbon approach to wastewater treatment. The Environment Agency supported the development of the project, working with Yorkshire Water, Stantec and delivery partner, Barhale Enpure JV.
The CEYH Awards recognise the best construction collaborations and projects in the Yorkshire and Humberside region, inspiring others to adopt new and better ways of working that deliver outstanding results. For the Net Zero category, the judges looked for projects or organisations that demonstrated strong environmental performance in terms of reducing carbon, greenhouse gas emissions, using sustainable materials and methods over the life of a project.
The Clifton scheme brought together international expertise to deliver one of the first biodiversity net gain positive wastewater treatment works in the UK. Planted with over 24,000 wetland plants, the interconnected ponds stimulate wildlife diversity and deliver impressive operational carbon savings of 79% and embodied carbon savings of 50%, with all material re-used on site during construction. Solar energy powers flow monitoring devices and the surplus construction area has been transformed into an adjoining ecological habitat.
The judges commented: “The new natural reedbed solutions is the UK’s first commercial demonstration of the near zero-carbon water treatment method at scale and the team are to be congratulated on their vision and Yorkshire based trailblazing prowess in delivering this hugely important initiative for the wastewater industry in the UK.”
