Stantec appointed to Wessex Water’s Wastewater Network Modelling Framework

01/10/2023 UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader of sustainable design and engineering services, has been selected as one of the consultants for Wessex Water’s Wastewater Network Modelling Services Framework.

Stantec’s specialist team of wastewater hydraulic modellers will support Wessex Water’s inhouse experts to model key sections of the network and identify areas where enhancements can be made or processes can be improved to deliver an even better service to its customers. Wessex Water’s network covers most of Dorset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire and treats 863 million litres of sewage from 2.8 million customers every day.

To identify where improvements can be made Wessex Water uses specialist software to construct digital models of key areas of its wastewater network. This modelling stock runs to many hundreds of models, but to take account of changes overtime to the physical network and the digital tools the models need to be periodically upgraded. Wessex Water is aiming to invest around £400,000 in upgrading its 2D modelling stock and around £350,000 in upgrading its 1D modelling stock during the remaining period of the current Asset Management Plan to 2025.

The Network Modelling Services Framework is divided into two lots. In Lot 1, work will involve 1D and 2D modelling activities and typically might include: the designing and planning of sewer flow surveys, verifying data, and the production of working models to represent current and future scenarios.

Under Lot 2, the focus will be on developing smart working tools and more automation of processes, for example, in approaches to adaptive planning. Existing and new software will also be developed to meet Wessex Water’s requirements.

Commenting on the modelling framework wins, Sally Walters, Stantec’s Operations Director – Water UK Midlands & West, said: “I am delighted that our leading team of wastewater hydraulic modellers has been appointed for this important framework contract. Our hydraulic modellers are recognised nationally for their expertise and will provide much needed support to our client Wessex Water to improve the maintenance and upgrade of its network.”

Paul Lewis, Director for Engineering and Delivery at Wessex Water, added: “To maintain and improve our wastewater assets we need to deploy the latest network modelling systems. This Framework will allow Stantec to work with us, using its extensive expertise in wastewater hydraulic modelling and support, so that we can continue to provide efficient, cost-effective wastewater services to our millions of customers.”
