Stantec builds on sustainability success with PAS 2080 certification

Stantec becomes PAS 2080 verified, reaching major milestone in UK and Ireland carbon reduction journey

08/10/2023 LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering services, has been awarded PAS 2080 certification by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

PAS 2080 is the leading standard for carbon management in buildings and infrastructure. It provides a common framework within the built environment, supporting organisations in reducing the whole life carbon emissions produced throughout projects. The standard considers and promotes collaboration through the whole value chain, aiming to reduce carbon and cost through intelligent planning, design, construction, and use.

This industry-accepted mark of trust confirms Stantec’s commitment to carbon reduction and cost efficiency for its own business and for its clients.

Stantec, which was recently named ‘Engineering consultancy of the Year’ at the Water Industry Awards, provides high-level strategic advice, detailed design, and operational support to clients across the built environment, helping companies become more sustainable and efficient. As part of a rigorous five-day verification process, Stantec drew on multiple case studies, at project and strategic level, showcasing to BSI how it supports, advises, and influences clients in better managing carbon.

Stantec also worked with the BSI and an industry working group supporting the development of the 2023 update to PAS 2080. Adrian Johnson, Stantec’s executive technical director for sustainability, led the technical advisory panel, helping guide the direction of the updated standard. He commented: “PAS 2080 is an invaluable specification for effective carbon management and delivering more sustainable system-level solutions in support of the net zero transition. It has also created a platform for innovation to thrive. At Stantec, we’re proud to have been at the forefront of developing this revised standard, supporting the built environment’s journey to a decarbonised future.”

Stantec’s award-winning work with Yorkshire Water designing Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works–Integrated Constructed Wetlands is also showcased in the PAS 2080: 2023 guidance document as an innovative solution that delivers lower cost and carbon outcomes.

Andy Bent-Marshall, programme manager for net zero implementation, said: “Decarbonisation is a key challenge for many of our clients, and we are excellently placed to support them with this. We have industry-leading knowledge and cutting-edge project examples across our business. From pioneering Nature-based Solutions, to creating smart digital water networks, we are continually helping our clients become more efficient and more responsible.

“This certification is a major milestone in our ongoing journey towards embedding carbon reduction as an industry standard, and in helping our clients towards their net zero goals."

As part of the audit process, BSI noted that Stantec’s delivery teams were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and there was clear evidence of collaboration and a detailed understanding of carbon maturity levels within Stantec’s client base.

Martin Townsend, director for BSI Centre of Excellence for Sustainability added: "BSI would like to congratulate Stantec on certifying to PAS 2080, which is designed to help built environment organizations accelerate progress towards a sustainable world by reducing their carbon emissions.

“This validates Stantec’s positive recognition and response to climate action, which can help bring wider long-term benefits for people and planet."

In April 2023, Stantec announced that it had delivered on its promise to achieve operational carbon neutrality for 2022, a key step in the phased process to achieve its own science-based net zero target.
