Visual storytelling can help large events with extensive road closures run smoothly—without creating traffic congestion

In celebration of Canada’s 150th year of Confederation, Ottawa 2017 was responsible for organizing memorable, world-class events in the national capital to mark the occasion. They engaged us to develop the traffic management plan in support of one of the events—a live, street theatre performance by La Machine, an international, urban, world-renowned French production. To facilitate the performances and to accommodate large crowds, the one-week show required the rolling closure of many streets in downtown Ottawa.

Our traffic management plan adopted a unique visual format that carefully choreographed the flow of the event and traffic management measures to the minute. This visual format assisted the production company, approvals agencies, all levels of government, emergency, and protective services, as well as other stakeholders, in understanding the transportation impacts that resulted from rolling road closures.

The visual document served as the guiding document for all stakeholders in developing all tactical and operational plans for this spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime outdoor theatre event.
