Delivering an educational facility through the creative arts in the heart of the former dockyard area of Plymouth

Our team supported Kier Contracting through the delivery of a ground-breaking educational facility in the heart of the former dockyard area in Plymouth. The school is proposed to be a mainstream, all-through school for 4-16-year-olds sponsored by the Plymouth College of Art. It will contribute a creative educational project of national significance to the wider redevelopment of Millbay—it’s part of the Devonport areas of Plymouth which has been subject to substantial regeneration from its former military and ship building heyday.

Delivering a large site in the middle of regeneration zone ahead of further redevelopment provided challenges in integrating it into both the existing and future networks. There were many challenges of bringing children into a school ahead of the residential development around it being delivered. To answer that need, we created an innovative travel plan that considered the needs of local children as well as those that would travel further to access the opportunities afforded by this specialist school.

Winner of the RIBA South West Awards 2016, the striking building stands out in the Plymouth skyline. Relaunching the regeneration of this side of the city, the school provided much needed local education at primary level, as well as addressing the overwhelming national need to deliver education both with and through the creative arts.
