Whittington Health NHS Trust Ventilation Systems Refurbishment

As part of a wider initiative to modernize clinical infrastructure, Whittington Health NHS Trust undertook a comprehensive refurbishment of operating theatre ventilation systems at Whittington Hospital. The Trust engaged our team to lead the design and delivery of these upgrades to help the hospital’s facilities meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and patient care.

The existing configuration featured a single air handling unit (AHU) serving two operating theatres. Recognizing the opportunity to enhance operational efficiency and clinical safety, we developed a solution that would address immediate needs and support future changes in clinical use. We began with a thorough review of documentation provided by the Trust, then conducted detailed site assessments. A validation report highlighted key areas for improvement, guiding our design process. We maintained close collaboration with the hospital’s estates and clinical teams throughout to deliver a solution that was technically robust and responsive to the needs of medical professionals.

Our team developed a fully Health Technical Memoranda compliant ventilation system, building flexibility into the design to accommodate future changes, supporting the Trust’s long-term goals. The installation of a new AHU with a plate heat exchanger brought significant energy savings—31.7 kilowatts saved per year, equating to 136.5 megawatts annually through heat recovery.

Over the 20-year lifespan of the AHU, with an average interest increase of two percent, the Trust will save a total of £300,250. The new system reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 31,154 kilograms per year. Operational efficiency improved, with £12,115 saved in the first year alone.

This project demonstrates the value of a proactive maintenance mindset. By addressing issues early and working collaboratively, the Trust unlocked savings, improved safety, and supported better patient care.
