Portland International Jetport Airside Infrastructure Improvements
For more than 20 years, we have worked with the Portland International Jetport and provided engineering services for the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and new construction of approximately 32 acres (13 hectares) of aircraft parking apron. The work was funded through six Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program grants and required extensive coordination to reduce impacts to airport operations while maintaining safety and security.
Over the course of various projects, we’ve provided data collection, design, permitting, bidding, project and grant administration, and construction observation. Projects have included apron design incorporating multiple pavement types along with improvements to electrical systems, geometry, pavement markings, surface drainage, and expansion of the deicing apron.
Our team designed the original deicing apron as well as future expansions. One of these included a comprehensive drainage system with 740 linear feet (226 linear metres) of trench drain to manage stormwater and spent aircraft deicing fluid. Stormwater is routed directly to the Fore River, while deicing fluid heads to a 500,000‑gallon (1.9-megalitre) underground storage tank for recycling. We also incorporated a redundant sampling system to support operational reliability during the deicing season.
Our close coordination with Jetport management, operations and ATCT personnel, the FAA, regulatory agencies, and users of the Jetport has resulted in over two decades of successful airside infrastructure improvement projects at the Portland International Jetport.
