PFAS: The forever chemicals
What are they, where are they, and what can we do about them?
Per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) are a group of human-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many others. They are found in many products, from firefighting foams, frying pans, and water- and stain-resistant clothing to dental floss, food-wrappers, and more. Evidence shows that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse human and ecological health effects.
Our team assesses PFAS distribution in the environment, understands the risks, designs potable water and wastewater solutions, and aids in mitigating future impacts. This holistic approach to these emerging contaminants is of paramount importance for the effective management of exposure, risks, and liabilities.
Water treatmentMany water systems around the globe are finding PFAS in their water sources—and in some cases high levels. As testing continues to identify more affected areas, the true scale of contamination is yet to be determined. Along with our water community partners and collaborators, Stantec is working hard to improve PFAS treatment of drinking water.
Environmental servicesPFAS are found in the environment in groundwater, surface water, soil, and sediment—and that means PFAS are also being found in the food chain, including in people, plants, and animals. We work with municipalities, industry, and federal agencies to support their management of PFAS related challenges. Our team offers site assessment, chemical fate review, transport, and risk evaluation, risk mitigation, remediation, stakeholder engagement, public outreach services, and more.
Research joint ventureThrough the strategic Johns Hopkins University/Stantec Alliance, our research tests novel treatment technologies, validates innovative approaches, and mines data for meaningful trends at a rapid rate. Our detection limits and turnaround time for PFAS analysis are among the best in the world.
