Matthew shares how he was drawn to Stantec’s welcoming culture and strong technical community, as well as the opportunity to contribute meaningfully
In the My Stantec Story series, our designers, engineers, marketers, project managers, and leaders come together to share how their career journeys at Stantec have shaped their lives and moved them closer to their goals
In my early 20s, I realized that I needed something more academically challenging and took an Access to HE course in science, which is A-Level equivalent course completed in a year. To my surprise, this led me to Manchester to study geology. About five years into my career as a surveyor, Covid hit, and I decided to really commit to my passion by pursuing a master’s in River Environments and Their Management at The University of Birmingham.
When it came time to find a job, I looked closely at Stantec. As someone who came into hydrogeology via an unconventional route, I was drawn to the welcoming culture, strong technical community, and opportunity to contribute meaningfully—both through my project work and the Employee Resource Groups (ERG).
I love the problem-solving nature of hydrogeology, especially during fieldwork. Being hands-on, seeing geology in context, and contributing to real-world outcomes for clients are rewarding. I also enjoy helping shape a more inclusive culture through our Neurodiversity ERG.
I’ve been encouraged to pursue both technical growth and personal development to become a well-rounded consultant. Support from managers and my wider network has helped me feel accepted and valued as a neurodivergent person, and I have been encouraged to try challenging things in safe environments. Training, mentoring, and a culture that welcomes openness have all helped me grow.
Delivering a large-scale groundwater monitoring program with tight deadlines was a proud moment. I worked across multiple teams, balancing logistics, fieldwork, and data quality. I found out what I’m capable of and how collaboration at Stantec leads to high-impact results. I particularly enjoyed how I have been on this project since it began, which has given me a wider view and demonstrated how our deliverables often shape future scopes.
I want to continue streamlining fieldwork efficiency, reducing project costs for clients, and explore how technology can enhance what we do and win us more work. I also hope to help improve how we incorporate neuroinclusion as a standard part of our process for supporting employees and structuring our teams.
I enjoy helping shape a more inclusive culture through our Neurodiversity Employee Resource Groups (ERG).
I love being outdoors, especially climbing, exploring rugged landscapes, and finding quiet or remote places. Music is a big part of my life, and I enjoy films that make me think or feel deeply. Travel is also important to me, particularly when it opens up new perspectives or lets me connect with nature.
Stantec supports you as a whole person. There’s space to grow, share ideas, and shape a better future—for our clients, communities, and ourselves.
At Stantec, we put people first. For Matthew, that means working where there’s a welcoming culture, strong technical community, and opportunity to contribute meaningfully.
