My Stantec Story: Jon Dodwell and the importance of human connection

June 13, 2022

Having worked at Stantec for over 25 years, Jon shares how our people are at the core of everything we do

In the My Stantec Story series, our designers, engineers, marketers, project managers, and leaders come together to share how their career journeys at Stantec have shaped their lives and moved them closer to their goals.

Tell us about your role…

As major projects director for the United Kingdom and Ireland Business, I’m accountable for developing Stantec's major projects capability and supporting the Company’s growth ambitions. I love the variety of the role, in terms of our people, our clients, and the huge variety of expertise we have in our company at a UK and Ireland level as well as internationally.

What was it that attracted you to a career at Stantec?

I have worked for Stantec for over 25 years. The one thing that has continually motivated and inspired me is our people: their knowledge, their passion, and their commitment to outstanding client service.

What has been the standout project for you during your time at Stantec?

There have been many highlights, but the one project that does stand out for me is the £250 million Brighton and Hove Wastewater scheme for Southern Water. Stantec was part of a joint venture with Costain and United Utilities and the delivery of the scheme was exceptionally challenging, but we successfully delivered on time and won Major Civil Engineering Project of the year in 2014 beating the Olympic Delivery Team! Continually and consistently overcoming challenges was the key attribute of this team. I will always remember the great leadership displayed by the Project Director. He was always fair, and always focused on addressing the issues.

How do you and your team deliver excellent client service?

To me, excellent client service is centred around the customer conversation and ensuring we are delivering to promises, needs, and expectations that are often continually evolving. The solution is to keep listening and do what you said you were going to do—be ready and agile for change!

I have worked for Stantec for over 25 years. The one thing that has continually motivated and inspired me is our people: their knowledge, their passion, and their commitment to outstanding client service.

Of our brand values which is most important to you and why?

I think all our brand values are important, but I believe people are at the heart of everything we do in the major projects community—the people leading and working in our project teams, our trusted partners, our clients and, of course, the people in the communities we serve.

What are your ambitions for the future at Stantec?

My ambition for Stantec is to be seen as one of the premier delivery partners for major projects in all of the UK and Ireland infrastructure market—I want our company to be recognised by clients and partners as a team known for delivering outstanding project outcomes.

What are your passions outside of work?

My family is very important to me. Our four boys ensure there is never a dull moment in our house! Thanks to my father, I am a lifelong Arsenal fan and that has always been a challenge, though things might be looking up!

Why should others join the Stantec team?

Stantec is a growing business and a great place to build a career with a huge variety of projects across all sectors of the infrastructure market. Here, you can work with teams who care about each other, their partners and clients—we’re committed to sustainably serving communities.

At Stantec, we put people first. For Jon, that means connecting with colleagues and clients to deliver outstanding projects that shape the communities we live in. If you want to start your career at Stantec, visit Why Choose Stantec  to find out more.
