The SCOPE: Designing sustainable data centres

May 30, 2025

From lean design to new materials and modular buildings, how can we turn good intentions around reducing embodied carbon in data centres into reality?

The SCOPE is a podcast addressing important issues influencing the sustainable future of real estate, infrastructure, the environment, and communities.

In this final episode of our three-part series on data centres, we discuss the incentives for more sustainable design and how we as designers and engineers can help drive this forward. We share examples of lean design reducing time and cost, considerations around new materials and design for manufacture and assembly, and how to address future sustainability challenges.

Thanks to Angela Vico Correas, director at architectural firm studioNWA, Roy Andrade, technical director at Sweet Projects, Timo Hendy, technical director at Stantec, and Stephen Meleady, MEP director and sector lead for data centres at Stantec, for joining us on this episode.
