Stantec joins new Fuel Change Challenge

A new initiative aims to attract the brightest minds from Scotland to develop ideas to tackle climate change

08/04/2021 READING, UNITED KINGDOM TSX, NYSE:STN

A team of Stantec’s employees across engineering and planning in our Edinburgh and Glasgow offices has joined a new Net Zero initiative, the Grangemouth Net Zero Challenge. It is supported by Fuel Change, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to involve young people in developing innovative low carbon solutions to the very real issues faced by industry and wider society, and INEOS. The initiative challenges bright minds across Scotland to come up with fresh ways to tackle climate change. Grangemouth is Scotland’s largest industrial carbon emitter so industrial decarbonisation is at the heart of the challenge. As one of the primary Grangemouth producers, INEOS has set its challenges in consultation with the Scottish Government.

Stantec’s team will work with 17 other teams across Scotland to address the challenge and its three phases or ‘sprints’ over the next four months. The Stantec team includes Emma Brown, Aaron Doidge, Robin Guy, Euan McLay, Jack Mulholland, and Ruth Taylor. It is being supported by Nick Skelton and Fiona Wardlaw.

The Fuel Change model has been hailed by Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy Michael Matheson as having the potential to create solutions that will have a significant impact on the energy sector and wider industry.

The teams will be guided by experienced mentors, and are the next generation of employees from Balfour Beatty, Bilfinger, bp, Booth Welsh, Calachem, Falkirk Council, Forth Ports, Fujifilm, INEOS FPS and INEOS O&P UK, Petroineos Refinery, Stantec UK and the University of Stirling. They will have the opportunity to let their voices be heard by showcasing their solutions to industry professionals.

Mr Matheson, who is also a local MSP, said he was looking forward to seeing the ideas generated by the challenge: “We are committed to ending Scotland’s contribution to climate change by 2045 - and ensuring we do it in a way that is fair and just and leaves no-one behind”.

“The Grangemouth Net Zero Challenge has the potential not only to develop solutions that will benefit the Grangemouth cluster but across industry and our energy sector, harnessing skills, knowledge and expertise that will be critical to supporting and developing good green jobs”.

Co-Founder of Fuel Change, Jennifer Tempany said: “We are absolutely delighted that INEOS and the Scottish Government have partnered with us to ‘Fuel Change’. This challenge programme brings together young people from across the breadth of industries in the Grangemouth area and is a truly unique opportunity to not only help meet Scotland’s target of Net Zero emissions by 2045, but to make a huge difference locally in our communities. We can’t wait to hear the innovative solutions from the next generation.”
