Guy’s Cancer Centre sweeps the board at Building Better Healthcare Awards 2018

The new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital was recognised at this year’s Building Better Healthcare Awards ceremony held on 1 November at The Brewery in central London. The Cancer Centre picked up an impressive five awards for Grand Prix Design, Acute Hospital, Internal Environment, Clinicians’ Choice and Sustainable Development.

The judges said: “To have achieved a building of this scale and complexity on such a restricted site is an exercise in sustainability.”

Guy’s Cancer Centre was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Stantec in close collaboration with patients for Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Arup provided integrated design engineering services and Laing O’Rourke was the main contractor.

The design of the Cancer Centre unifies world-class cancer treatments and research in an uplifting, non-institutional and clinically efficient healthcare setting. To create a welcoming, human-scale patient and staff experience, the 14-storey building is arranged in four stacked ‘Villages’—Welcome, Radiotherapy, Outpatients and Chemotherapy—each with its own distinct identity relating to a specific patient need. Notably, the Cancer Centre is also the first hospital in Europe to locate its radiotherapy treatment above ground—a key decision which was taken following feedback from the Patient Reference Group.

Catherine Zeliotis, Healthcare Leader at Stantec and for the project, says: “It is wonderful to see so much innovative thinking and dedication from everyone involved in the project get rewarded. We are delighted that Guy’s Cancer Centre is inspiring patients and staff and provides a truly supportive environment.”
