John leads the contract delivery of Southland District Council’s structural professional services and helps the Council manage its network of 1,088 bridges. This involves inspections, approval of overweight vehicles’ bridge use, heavy duty maintenance requirements, programming and prioritisation assistance, contract development, tendering, letting, and MSQA (management, surveillance, and quality assurance) for bridge upgrades and replacements.
His knowledge of and decades-long association with the district’s bridges makes John a specialist, as well as being a contracts expert.
What does John like best about his job? The challenges of getting as much life and value out of bridge structures as possible while minimising risks to bridge users. This includes coming up with best-value bridge upgrade or replacement options.
John is particularly proud of his work carrying out load testing on a selection of the district’s timber bridge beams. He compared the assessed beam strengths, based on visual and hammer testing, against the measured strengths when loaded with weight up to 12 tons. The test results indicated we had good engineering judgement.
Outside of work John enjoys water skiing, travelling in his motor home, and cruising on his motorcycle.
