Innovative and sustainable design revitalises the heritage charm of this developing inner-city area
With over 30,000 new residential dwellings expected by 2030, Green Square is one of Australia’s fastest growing neighbourhoods. For the first time in over 100 years, that meant designing a new town centre in Sydney. The goal? World-class community facilities including a library, plaza, an aquatic centre, parks and playgrounds, a childcare centre, and a creative hub. However, with the project located in one of Sydney’s oldest industrial hubs, the site had numerous constraints and challenges.
The site was heavily flood affected, contaminated from industrial land use, and saturated by uncontrolled fill from historical brick pit usage. We’ve been working with the Green Square Consortium for the past five years to provide civil engineering services for remediation, enabling works, and construction support. We’ve been addressing the site contamination, designing essential infrastructure works such as public roads and utilities, conducting a flood assessment, and providing expert advice during construction.
An ambitious, community-focused project, the Green Square Town Centre was awarded a 6 Star Green Star - Communities rating by the Green Building Council of Australia, the highest possible rating. With its close connection to the airport, Sydney city centre, and public transportation access by rail, bus, and cycleway, the Green Square Town Centre is building on a rich past and preparing for an exciting future.
