A new school designed to promote modern learning while supporting community needs
Charles Dickens Elementary School, the new 24 classroom facility serves two purposes—educating students and strengthening community connections. The new green building includes educational facilities you’ll find in other primary schools, such as a library, classrooms, special education rooms, commons, cafeteria, and more. However, it also includes special program elements such as a gymnasium that is also designed as a post-disaster facility, multi-purpose room, and commons area, which are available for after-hours community use.
Neighborhood connections are further strengthened by engaging and educating others regarding the building’s sustainable design. This is demonstrated in a building tour program that is run by the students, a facilities department that monitors the building performance through a network DDC control system, public open houses, as well as community gardens and public space on site that promotes sustainable goals through passive means. A building website encourages further community outreach.
