Sour Gas Project in Western China for a US-based Gas Company

This sour gas project is being developed by the China National Petroleum Corporation and a US-based gas company in western China. As the project footprint is significant to the agricultural community in the area, our client knew it would be important to prioritize community engagement to determine the best ways to promote alternative livelihood.

Stantec was selected to conduct community engagement services and help the client manage input and concerns. In total, five of our consultants were involved in the project working with a team of 10 subconsultants. Due to the community strengths in agriculture and somewhat limited education levels, it would have been quite challenging to develop non-agricultural programs to support livelihood restoration without their input. Our services included post-resettlement livelihood restoration support, community grievance management, internal resettlement monitoring and evaluation, and public consultation and information disclosure.

Our support allowed the client to address concerns in a timely manner. Ultimately, they handed over decisions to the communities with guidance from consultants so that livelihood restoration programs could be designed to suit the needs of the community.
