Developing an old airfield site into a 575-hectare mixed-use Enterprise Zone
When Urban&Civic, a master developer focused on turning disused land into full-featured communities, needed to secure a resolution to grant consent for a major new community near Huntingdon, they engaged our multi-disciplinary team to help. Alconbury Weald will include 5,000 new homes and three million square feet (290,000 square metres) of employment space, generating over 8,000 new jobs. Crucially, through our bespoke monitor and manage phased approach transport strategy, conceived during the global financial crisis, the scheme was able to proceed, even when others remained stagnant.
We have played a pivotal role from the early concept stage to the delivery of critical infrastructure (from concept design and planning to detailed design, technical approval, and active on-site construction support). Our team was appointed as the designer for all technical, engineering, and environmental aspects including transport, highways, flooding, drainage, ground conditions, utilities, waste, energy, noise, air quality, structures, and other multidisciplinary engineering and environmental work.
The application was favourably described by Government cabinet office and acknowledged by Estates Gazette to be the largest development in the UK at the time of submission in 2012.
