The Clifton ICW design is based on decades of research on wetlands systems and their ability to improve water quality

Across the United Kingdom, tightened phosphorus permit limits are placing pressure on water companies to introduce new nutrient removal schemes. Knowing wetlands have demonstrated water quality improvements, Yorkshire Water Services (YWS) was looking to develop an integrated constructed wetlands (ICW) for the Clifton Wastewater Treatment Works.

Stantec is working with YWS to design, install, and operate the ICW at Clifton. This initiative endeavors to demonstrate long-term sanitary treatment performance with a specific focus on phosphorus retention. While wetlands have been designed to successfully treat common sanitary pollutants, phosphorus removal is more complex and has not been consistently demonstrated within a treatment wetland. ICWs could provide a solution, as the broad diversity of plant species in combination with larger land areas and extended retention time may encourage sustainable phosphorus retention.

The overall goal of the Clifton ICW will be to demonstrate the benefits of blending proven Nature-based Solutions, including treatment wetland functions with enhanced biodiversity and habitat, for the long-term sustainable treatment of sanitary wastewater.
