A forward-thinking solution to renovate a 1950s-era airforce hangar

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command was looking for a forward-thinking solution to design a 36,000-square-foot (3,345-square-metre) renovation for a 1950s-era hangar at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. The project had to achieve at least a Silver Certification under the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating system. Not only did we meet the Silver requirement, we exceeded it, earning the NavFac a LEED Gold Certification.

The renovation included administration space for flight planning, instructor pilot testing and training space, and completely new exterior envelope and finishes. New doors and windows, new rolling hangar doors, an aqueous film-forming foam fire suppression system to meet new codes, new toilet and locker facilities, and office and storage space are among the project’s finishing touches.

Our services included civil, structural, heating, ventilation, cooling, plumbing, and electrical design. We reviewed  shop drawings, responded to requests for information during construction, and prepared record drawings. From start to finish, we collaborated with the Army, Navy, and Air Force activities.
