Supporting the FAA’s NextGen initiative with more than 30 aeronautical surveys

In a place as big as Alaska—more than 663,000 square miles—air travel is essential. More than 80 percent of Alaska communities are not served by roads.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) owns 254 airports, many of them remote. The ADOT&PF and other clients have repeatedly turned to Stantec’s geomatics experts for our pioneering efforts with “aeronautical surveys”—focused on supporting the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) NextGen initiative including airports geographic information system (AGIS) and the development of satellite based vertically guided instrument approach procedures. We have performed this specialized work at more than 30 airports in Alaska since 2010. We have been following the FAA Advisory Circulars 150/5300-16A, 150/5300-17C and 150/5300-18B. Our staff has developed a custom suite of Python scripts to increase efficiency and accuracy in the manipulation of raw survey and aerial mapping data, build Obstruction Identification Surfaces, and calculate/populate attributes of AGIS deliverables.

We were involved in some of the first-generation projects being performed in the country and these services are becoming common practice at Stantec.
